Honoring Dolores Huerta

Dolores Huerta is a co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association and is one of the most influential labor activists of the 20th century as well as a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. Huerta was born on April 10, 1930 in Dawson, New Mexico to farm worker parents. She moved to Stockton, California when she was three years old after her parents divorced. She grew up in Stockton and was a school teacher during the 1950s, where she noticed many children of farm workers would come to school hungry so she decided to help the families by organizing farmers and farm workers.

In 1962, Huerta and Cesar Chávez founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), the predecessor of the United Farm Workers' Union, UFW, which formed three years later. She served as UFW vice president until 1999. Her work with the UFW included organizing workers, negotiating contracts, advocating for safer working conditions (such as eliminating harmful pesticides), and fighting for unemployment and healthcare benefits for agricultural workers. During the 1990s and 2000s, she has worked to elect more Latinos and women to political office and has championed women's issues.

Huerta has received many honors in recognition for her efforts, including the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award in 1998 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. She is currently the president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation which "passionately advocates for social justice, focusing on empowering marginalized communities through grassroots organizing, civic engagement, and education initiatives. By championing the rights of underrepresented populations, [they] strive to create a more equitable and inclusive society for all."

Today, April 10, 2024, Dolores Huerta celebrates her 94th birthday. The Governing Board of the Saugus Union School District honors her in accordance with the California Education Code (Section 37222.20).
